With regular government support cut off, the people were left with no money to purchase food. It was a desperate time. The Church began to pray. Then the miracle happened. The islanders discovered healthy fish were beaching themselves on the shores with for no apparent reason. The Lord had heard and answered. For months, every day the fish would appear on the beach still alive, seemingly transported from the depths of the ocean off the coral ridge that surrounds the island. Scientist had no explanation other that “el Nino”. But this strange occurrence had never happened before and it met the immediate need for food for the desperate islanders. The Church knew their prayers for provision were answered. The fish kept coming until the government checks resumed some time later.

The phosphate deposits mined and shipped to nations all over the earth provided a dependable source of income that made the people of Nauru the wealthiest per capita in the Pacific region. Their wealth was distributed to the people as well as used to invest in projects such as an airline with a fleet of seven 747’s. With a population of only 8-12 thousand, they were the envy of the South Pacific. In ’94 and ’95 the prosperity ended with the depletion of the retrievable phosphate. Mining stopped and so did the flow of funds on which the nation’s economy was built. Nauru was plunged into poverty.
